GPT o3
o3 is OpenAI's reasoning model, released on April 16, 2025 alongside o4-mini. It extends its chain of thought at inference time before answering, and at launch it led several mathematics, science and coding benchmarks, before the GPT-5 family superseded it. OpenAI names the reasoning line without a GPT prefix, so the model is o3, not GPT-o3. It belongs to OpenAI's o-series, the line trained to spend additional compute at inference time instead of answering immediately; in the API the amount of that compute is set per request with a reasoning effort parameter. OpenAI has not published o3's architecture or training data; what is documented is that the model is trained with reinforcement learning to reason before answering and can use tools, including web search, Python and image analysis, inside its chain of thought. The model demonstrates exceptional capabilities in mathematical competition problems, scientific research assistance, complex coding challenges, and multi-step analytical reasoning while maintaining strong alignment with human values and safety considerations.
