GPT 4.1

GPT-4.1 is a family of OpenAI models released in the API on April 14, 2025, made up of gpt-4.1, gpt-4.1-mini and gpt-4.1-nano. All three accept text and image input and support a context window of up to 1 million tokens, and OpenAI positioned them as an improvement over GPT-4o in coding and instruction following. The release followed OpenAI's pattern of shipping incremental updates to an existing model line rather than a new architecture, with the three size variants trading accuracy for lower cost and latency. OpenAI has not published the training data, parameter count or architecture of the GPT-4.1 models; its documented alignment approach for the GPT line is reinforcement learning from human feedback together with the behavior rules set out in its published Model Spec. OpenAI's launch benchmarks put the largest of those gains in software engineering tasks. Typical applications include content generation, document analysis, customer service automation and research assistance, with the long context window aimed at tasks that feed large codebases or document sets into a single request. The models are served through the OpenAI API rather than as downloadable weights, so deployment means calling a hosted endpoint.
