Microsoft Copilot & OpenAI Plugins are integrated AI assistant ecosystems that extend large language model capabilities through modular, extensible plugin architectures that connect AI systems with external services, applications, and data sources. Microsoft Copilot encompasses AI-powered assistants integrated across Microsoft 365, Windows, and Azure services that run on OpenAI models served through Azure OpenAI alongside Microsoft's own in-house models, providing contextual assistance, content generation, and workflow automation. OpenAI Plugins were an early extension mechanism for ChatGPT, introduced in 2023 and retired in 2024, when OpenAI stopped new plugin conversations and shut down the existing ones. Their role passed to GPT Actions, function and tool calling in the API, and later to apps built on the Apps SDK and to the Model Context Protocol, which are the current ways to connect OpenAI models to third-party APIs and data. These systems utilize function calling, API integration, and semantic routing to dynamically access real-time information, execute tasks, and provide specialized capabilities beyond pre-trained model knowledge. Plugin architectures incorporate security frameworks, permission management, and sandboxing mechanisms that ensure safe interaction with external systems while maintaining user privacy and data protection. Microsoft Copilot integrates deeply with Office applications, enabling intelligent document editing, data analysis, and communication assistance, while the plugin ecosystem covered use cases such as web browsing, booking and ordering, and access to specialized data sources, which are now served by GPT Actions and apps. Together, these platforms demonstrate how AI assistants can be enhanced through modular extensions that provide dynamic capabilities and real-world connectivity.
