What is an Open AI?
Open AI — not to be confused with OpenAI, the company — refers to artificial intelligence systems, models, and technologies that are publicly accessible, transparent, and developed using open-source principles where code, data, and methodologies are freely available for inspection, modification, and distribution. This approach contrasts with proprietary AI systems by promoting transparency, reproducibility, and collaborative development within the research community. Open AI encompasses open-source machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch, permissively licensed models such as BERT and Mistral 7B, open-weights models such as Llama, released under a custom license with usage restrictions and without their training data, and fully open models such as OLMo, which publish training data and training code as well. Key characteristics include accessible source code, documented architectures, and reproducible training procedures; licensing varies from permissive open-source terms to custom licenses that restrict commercial use.
