Weak artificial intelligence
Weak artificial intelligence refers to AI systems designed to perform specific, narrow tasks within limited domains, lacking general intelligence or consciousness found in humans. Also known as narrow AI, these systems excel at predefined functions like image recognition, language translation, or game playing but cannot transfer knowledge across different domains or exhibit genuine understanding. Weak AI operates through pattern recognition, statistical analysis, and algorithmic processing without self-awareness or autonomous goal formation. Examples include virtual assistants, recommendation systems, autonomous vehicles, and diagnostic tools that demonstrate superhuman performance within their specialized domains. Current AI technologies, including large language models and computer vision systems, represent weak AI implementations despite their sophisticated capabilities. For AI agents, weak artificial intelligence defines the current technological paradigm where systems excel at specific tasks while requiring human oversight and domain-specific training for each new application area.
