MCP AI Agent
An MCP AI agent is an AI agent that uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) — an open protocol Anthropic published in November 2024 — to reach external tools, data sources, and services through standardized MCP servers instead of a separate bespoke integration per tool. The agent acts as an MCP client: it connects to one or more servers, discovers the tools, resources, and prompts each server exposes, and calls them while working through a task. The protocol itself defines no planning or learning behavior; permissions and approval for a given tool call sit with the host application that runs the client. In practice one agent can reach a CRM, a document store, a ticketing system, or an internal API through separate MCP servers, keeping one integration surface instead of one client library per system. Servers run either as local processes over stdio or as remote services over HTTP, and the same server can be reused by any MCP-compatible client.
