Cohere Command R+

Cohere Command R+ is a 104B-parameter language model released in April 2024, positioned above the smaller Command R for enterprise workloads built on retrieval-augmented generation, multi-step tool use, and document processing. It has a 128,000-token context window, and its weights were published on Hugging Face under a non-commercial research license, with commercial use running through Cohere's API. Cohere has since moved the line forward with Command A (111B parameters, March 2025), so Command R+ is no longer the company's leading enterprise model. The model was trained for grounded generation with inline citations: given a set of retrieved documents, it returns an answer whose spans are attributed to the source documents, which makes the output checkable against the retrieval corpus. It also supports multi-step tool use, where the model calls tools across several turns before answering, and Cohere trained it for multilingual use with ten languages as primary evaluation targets.

Typical deployments cover business analytics, customer service, research assistance, and knowledge management systems, where answers have to be traceable to internal documents rather than generated from the model's own parameters. Cohere's managed fine-tuning service covered Command R rather than Command R+, so adapting Command R+ to a domain meant working through retrieval, prompting, and tool definitions instead of updating weights on the hosted model.
