AI plugin
AI plugin is a modular software extension that integrates artificial intelligence capabilities into existing applications, platforms, or systems, enabling users to access AI-powered features without switching between different tools or environments. These plugins extend host application functionality by connecting to AI models, APIs, or services to perform tasks such as content generation, data analysis, language translation, code completion, or intelligent automation within familiar user interfaces. AI plugins usually run inside a vendor-specific extension framework: each host application defines its own packaging, permission model, and lifecycle for installation, configuration, and removal. The cross-vendor layer is thinner and sits below the plugin: function calling, also called tool use, at the model API level, and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), published by Anthropic in November 2024 and adopted by other vendors, which lets a single server expose tools and data to any client that speaks the protocol. Modern AI plugins leverage large language models, computer vision systems, and specialized AI services to provide contextually relevant assistance directly within user workflows, reducing friction and improving productivity. Enterprise applications utilize AI plugins to enhance customer relationship management systems, document editors, project management platforms, and business intelligence tools with intelligent features while maintaining data security and user control over AI functionality activation.
