Agentive AI

Agentive AI is artificial intelligence that acts on a user's behalf, carrying out tasks in the background and reporting back, rather than simply responding to prompts. The term was popularized by Christopher Noessel in Designing Agentive Technology (2017), where the emphasis falls on a system working for a person who retains oversight and can intervene; the adjacent term agentic AI puts the emphasis on the system's own decision-making autonomy instead. These systems can interact with tools, access data sources, execute workflows, and adapt their approach based on real-time feedback. Unlike traditional AI that generates responses, agentive AI operates as digital workers that can handle multi-step processes, integrate with existing software systems, and maintain context across extended interactions. This technology enables businesses to automate sophisticated workflows that require reasoning, decision-making, and dynamic problem-solving capabilities.
