Who is OpenAI identifies OpenAI as a pioneering artificial intelligence research and deployment company founded in December 2015 by technology visionaries including Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and other prominent figures in the AI and technology sectors. Currently led by CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI employs world-renowned researchers, engineers, and AI safety experts who have created revolutionary systems including the GPT language model series, ChatGPT conversational interface, DALL-E image generation platform, and Whisper speech recognition technology. The organization began as a non-profit research laboratory and in 2019 added a capped-profit arm backed by Microsoft and other strategic investors, which enabled large investments in computational infrastructure and talent acquisition. In October 2025 OpenAI restructured: the non-profit became the OpenAI Foundation, which controls OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation, and the earlier capped-profit structure was retired. Jakub Pachocki has served as chief scientist since 2024, after co-founder Ilya Sutskever left the company in May 2024; chief technology officer Mira Murati departed in September 2024. The organization influences global AI policy, sets industry standards for responsible AI development, and maintains partnerships with governments, academic institutions, and technology companies worldwide.
