Strong artificial intelligence refers to hypothetical AI systems that possess human-level cognitive abilities across all intellectual domains, including consciousness, self-awareness, genuine understanding, and general problem-solving capabilities that match or exceed human intelligence. Also known as artificial general intelligence (AGI), strong artificial intelligence would demonstrate autonomous reasoning, creativity, emotional intelligence, and the ability to transfer knowledge seamlessly between disparate fields without domain-specific programming or training. Unlike narrow AI systems that excel at specific tasks, strong AI would exhibit comprehensive cognitive flexibility, adaptability, and learning capabilities comparable to human minds while potentially surpassing human limitations through superior processing speed, memory capacity, and computational resources. This theoretical form of AI would possess intentionality, subjective experiences, and genuine comprehension rather than sophisticated pattern matching or statistical processing. Strong artificial intelligence remains beyond current technological capabilities, representing a long-term research goal that presents significant technical challenges including consciousness modeling, general reasoning frameworks, value alignment, and safety considerations.
